The Town of Speedway is located on the near west side of Indy and is completely surrounded by the city of Indianapolis. The town was founded in 1903 and the fire department was first organized in 1916. In 1971, the department changed from volunteer to career. SFD currently includes 34 members who respond to 4,300 runs each year from two stations. SFD provides Fire, Rescue and EMS non-transport protection to 13,000 residents and 8 square miles. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is known as the Racing Capital of the World and their population swells from 13,000 to nearly 500,000 during events such as the Indy 500, the Brickyard 400, Brickyard 200 and Moto GP.
