Washington Township Fire Department protected the north and northeast sides of Indianapolis prior to their merger with IFD on January 1,  2007. The fifth largest township in the state (population wise) became the first of several Township Fire Departments in Marion County to merge independently with IFD. Fire firehouses provided Fire, Rescue, Water Rescue and ALS/BLS  ambulance services across the city's north side. These firehouses are now part of Battalions 1 and 2.
