The City of Elkhart is located 20 miles east of South Bend along the I-80 toll road in northern Elkhart County. This career department was founded in 1867 and currently includes 129 firefighters at seven fire stations, staffing six engines, three ambulances, one quint, and one aerial as front line apparatus. Additionally the fire department provides different technical levels of response, including Aircraft Rescue Firefighting apparatus (ARFF), a Hazardous Material response team, Technical Rescue Team, and a Water Rescue Team with most of these specialty apparatus being cross-staffed by frontline crews. Elkhart's 7 stations provide Fire, Tactical Rescue and ALS protection to just over 30 square miles and 52,348 residents (2019).
