Merrillville Fire Station 72 - 7905 Taft Street
Originally founded as the Independence Hill Volunteer Fire Department, this company officially changed their name and charter to become Merrillville Station 2 in 2000. Built in 1998, this firehouse now serves as Merrillville FD Station 72. It is currently home to three frontline apparatus, two reserve apparatus and a contracted ambulance service.

This new version of Truck 2 replaced an aged but reliable Mack/Aerialscope in the summer of 2005. Truck 2 is the first-due apparatus for structure fires within 72's district. It is second due for rescue calls and mutual aid.

Two identical rear-mount aerials were delivered to RTFS in July of 2005. Trucks 2 & 4 are twins.

Rescue 7231 was originally first due for EMS, rescue and extrication calls from Station 4. It has since been reassigned to Station 72 where it still responds to extrication calls behind Ladder 72.

Rescue 7131 previously responded to all tactical rescues and advanced extrications. It's equipment includes a 15Kw Generator, 8--bottle Cascade System, Gas & Electric Extrication Tools, a Plasma Cutter and Air Bags for vehicle and structure stabilization. It is the only apparatus in the department with it's unique Metallic Crimson color.
