The Town of English is located near the crossroads of IN-37 and IN-64 in central Crawford County. The department was first organized in 1932 as the English VFD (a town dept). The English VFD, Inc. was formed in 1972 to provide additional rural fire protection on a subscription basis. Finally, the English Fire District was formed in 1987 to combine the two entitys which now includes 35 members who respond to 350 runs each year. EFD provides Fire, Rescue and Medical First-Responder protection to 5,000 residents and 160 square miles. Their rural and very hilly district includes Patoka, Union, Johnson and Sterling Townships. They also respond to 7 miles of I-64.
