Putnam County is located west-southwest of Indianapolis along I-70 and US-40-in west-central Indiana. The county seat of this large, but sparsely populated rural county is Greencastle, which is also the home to DePauw University. Eleven fire departments protect the county's 37,779 residents (2018) and 482 square miles.
